The choice of whether to have music in your ceremony and if so which music to have is a very personal one. It will have a large impact on the atmosphere for your ceremony and also on how the ceremony feels to you. Think about the style and type of wedding you want to have and then make your music decisions based on that.
Traditionally there are certain points during a wedding ceremony when music is played.
The most common times to have music are as follows:-
- Prelude/Background music before the wedding (15 – 20 minutes)
This music helps to set the atmosphere for your ceremony. It also makes your guests feel more comfortable while they are waiting for you to arrive.
- The Bridal procession (2-3 minutes)
This is the music that the Bride and her Bridesmaids walk down the aisle to. It is music that you will remember for the rest of your life!
- During the signing of the register (5-10 minutes)
Playing music while you are signing the Register and certificates not only makes your guests more comfortable it also gives you a little bit of privacy to talk to each other during the signing.
- The Recessional and Post Ceremony mingling (5-10 minutes)
Music can be played as you are walking back down the aisle to be congratulated by your guests. It can be used as a signal to your guests that the ceremony is finished. Having background music playing after the ceremony makes your guests feel more comfortable; it acts as an ice breaker and makes it easier for them to mingle.
It’s entirely up to you if you want to have music in your ceremony and where you would like to have it. If you do decide to have music in your ceremony you will also need to decide what type of music you would like. Do you want to have live musicians such as a string quartet or would you rather use recorded music that has particular meaning for you? Do you want classical or rock music or perhaps something in between? When choosing music it’s a good idea to read the lyrics of each song to make sure that they are appropriate for your wedding.
If you choose to use recorded music, you are welcome to play it through my PA system. You simply provide the music on either CD, to be played in my CD player, or IPod which is plugged directly into my system. You will also need to arrange for a trusted friend to queue the music, as we will be too busy marrying you to do that. I will explain to them what they are to do, either at the rehearsal or on the day itself, but you will need to give them instructions on which songs to play for each section. I recommend that you trial your music at the rehearsal so we can be sure that it works and that there are no nasty surprises and everything is perfect on your wedding day.
